Following a successful first shipment facilitated by the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub, Malawi-based soya producer Dalitso General Suppliers has secured 11 follow-on orders from the South African buyer, Impilo Products. Also, with USAID TradeHub support, South Africa-based Ilanga Oils/Irwing Soya has confirmed an initial order of 90 tons of Dalitso soya during this reporting period. The recent shipment, arrived in three truckloads this week. The first load, to Impilo Products/Irwing Soya, arrived in Pretoria, South Africa, on June 8, 2020. The remaining 11 shipments to Impilo Products are planned for delivery between now and October 2020. The USAID TradeHub linked the two firms by presenting non-GMO soya samples to the South African buyers, which led to the purchase of three monthly orders of Dalitso soya on a trial basis. In January 2020, the USAID TradeHub identified Impilo Products, the largest processor of soya for human consumption in South Africa, as a suitable buyer of non-GMO soya beans. These deals validate the USAID TradeHub’s hypothesis about the growing demand for non-GMO soya inputs in South Africa, especially as consumers exhibit greater interest in meat replacements and fortified cereals.
