On August 13, 2020, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub hosted “South Africa and U.S Shipping 101: Shipping and Clearing Procedures Unbundled,” a webinar for southern African exporters and the organizations that support them. In attendance were 66 regional firms, trade and investment promotion agencies, and business membership organizations. Representatives of Turners Shipping and BDP International, clearing firms based in South Africa and the United States, respectively, gave an overview of how to move products from southern Africa to the two target countries. Experienced and prospective exporters frequently express that they face challenges in understanding the processes, forms, and actors associated with moving products into South Africa and the United States. This leads to risks and uncertainties during the fulfilment of cross-border trade transactions. To help mitigate these risks, the USAID TradeHub invited Turners Shipping and BDP International to share their knowledge and insights on the process. The firms bring more than 100 years of combined experience supporting exporters with shipping and clearing. The webinar was part of the USAID TradeHub’s Objectives 1 and 3, which seek to boost southern African exports to South Africa and the United States.
