On August 17, 2020, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub hosted the first in a three-part webinar series on exporting to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). The webinar, “Fundamentals of Importing into the U.S.,” welcomed 82 participants from across the region. The session featured two expert presentations, a panel discussion, and a lively interaction between the four panelists and the audience. The webinar series forms part of the support offered by the USAID TradeHub to inform regional exporters on U.S. market entry requirements and how to utilize AGOA. During stakeholder engagements as part of the USAID TradeHub’s development of an AGOA toolkit, it was evident that one of the constraints to AGOA utilization is lack of information on compliance requirements and procedures. In response to this need, the first webinar included a detailed presentation on the U.S. food safety verification program. The USAID TradeHub invited its partner U.S. Import Agent to share practical insights into the compliance process with participants. USAID TradeHub Portfolio Managers also participated in the panel discussion and shared common themes they have identified while supporting regional export firms to enter the U.S. market. The webinar series is part of the USAID TradeHub’s Objective 3 activities, which seek to leverage AGOA to boost southern African exports to the United States.
