On August 31, 2020, in collaboration with Registrar Corp, Taste Africa Foods, and Wesgro, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub hosted a virtual webinar entitled “Food and Beverages Exports: Procedures, Compliance, and Best Practices under AGOA.” The webinar, which was attended by 102 participants, was the last in a three-part series in which experts shared their strategies for successfully entering the U.S. market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. A USAID TradeHub advisor offered an overview of basic customs laws for exporting food and beverages into the United States while a representative of U.S.-based trade facilitation partner Registrar Corp unpacked Food and Drug Administration import regulations. For its part, South Africa-based Wesgro highlighted the role of trade and investment promotion agencies in export promotion and facilitation, especially under the largely underutilized AGOA program. Meanwhile, Taste Africa Foods focused on the requirements for exporting fast-moving consumer goods, such as packaged foods, to the United States. The August 31 webinar, along with the two AGOA-focused gatherings which preceded it, will inform a forthcoming USAID TradeHub toolkit for current and prospective exporters to the United States. The activity aligns with the USAID TradeHub’s third objective, which seeks to boost Southern African exports to the United States through AGOA.
