On October 1, 2020, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub (USAID TradeHub) in Eswatini facilitated a meeting between Eswatini Kitchen (ESK) and 5 Minutes to Town (5M2T), a South Africa-based distributor to informal spaza shops. The two firms agreed to test ESK’s products in the South African informal market, through what is known as Stage 1 testing or research. Four different products have been listed for the initial testing—jams, chili sauces, chutneys, and pickled condiments known as achaars. The partnership follows a USAID TradeHub webinar hosted in collaboration with 5M2T and attended by ESK. The USAID TradeHub facilitated a meeting between ESK and 5M2T, which resulted in a deal note being signed. ESK and 5M2T then initiated a further meeting to finalize details of the product testing. The USAID TradeHub participated in this follow-up meeting, which was held on October 1, 2020. Following the meeting, the companies are to agree on the structure of the spaza shops assessment to be issued to the different firms by 5M2T.
