The USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub met with the Water Bottling Federation of Lesotho on June 3, 2020 in Maseru to explore how USAID TradeHub activities can support the federation and its members. The USAID TradeHub also sought to learn about the federation’s plans to earn product certification for its members from the South African Bureau of Standards. The certification technical assistance will further the USAID TradeHub’s efforts to facilitate exports of bottled water to South Africa. Such exports from southern African countries are a key objective of the USAID TradeHub. The meeting, which was attended by six federation members, followed a March 2020 collaboration agreement between the USAID TradeHub and the federation. The engagement emerged from USAID TradeHub research into its year-four work plan, which identified bottled water as a priority product for export from Lesotho. Following a detailed discussion at the June 3 meeting, attendees agreed that the federation, with USAID TradeHub support, should begin forging market linkages in South Africa. This activity will run in parallel to the federation’s efforts to secure South African Bureau of Standards certification for its members. Although this certification will further boost the prospects for export, several federation members may be in a position to begin engaging with the South African market, as their water products already meet the minimum requirements of the Food Law of South Africa.
