The USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub is supporting Malawi-based Thanthwe Farms Ltd., to export their horticultural products to South Africa and the U.S, and to access processing machinery from South Africa. This follows the company’s contact with the USAID TradeHub after their attendance of two of the program’s webinars on June 4 and June 30. The first of these focused on linking regional suppliers with South African spaza shops, and the second focused on explaining e-commerce to firms using the Amazon model. As Malawi’s leading horticulture and herbs producer, Thanthwe Farms Ltd. envisions the opening of markets for smallholder farmers in the value chains they support, by sourcing raw materials directly from, and creating an outgrower system with smallholder farmers. With support from the USAID TradeHub, Thanthwe Farms Ltd, aims to become a leading supplier of specialty foods and ingredients in Malawi and the region. This initiative includes its export to South Africa and the U.S. of dried fruits and vegetables, and herbal tea products. To date, the USAID TradeHub has conducted due diligence for Thanthwe Farms to facilitate linkages to capital providers in South Africa. Supporting the company to export to South Africa and the U.S, and to access processing machinery from South Africa, forms part of the program’s three objectives: increasing exports to South Africa from the region, increasing exports to the U.S. under the African Growth and Opportunity Act and increasing investment out of South Africa to the region.
