Agriculture comprises nearly a third of Malawi's gross domestic product (GDP), but a dearth of storage facilities translates into significant post-harvest losses in staples such as maize and tobacco. The lack of storage exacerbates food insecurity, prevents producers from taking advantage of fluctuations in market prices, and hinders the growth of the warehouse receipts system (WRS), enabling producers to access financing.
