On April 15, 2020, the USAID TradeHub met with Botswana’s Special Economic Zones Authority (SEZA) to explore the possibility of hosting a virtual finance and investment roadshow with South African investors. The discussion centered on increasing investment—of capital and technology—from South Africa to Botswana, consistent with the USAID TradeHub’s objectives. Since SEZA focuses specifically on investments that can boost the country’s export market, the trade and investment promotion agency can also contribute to another of the USAID TradeHub’s three objectives—facilitating exports from southern Africa to South Africa. The joint virtual investor roadshow is expected to take place in May 2020 and aims to attract South African capital providers and private firms interested in expanding into Botswana. On offer will be a suite of SEZA incentives designed to ease entry for these South African market actors. The USAID TradeHub hopes to use the upcoming virtual roadshow as a test case for similar events, which would showcase other countries within the USAID TradeHub’s regional portfolio.
