On April 17, 2020, the USAID TradeHub held a virtual meeting with the Botswana Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI) to plan a biennial review of the country’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) Utilization Strategy. The review, which will include consultations with a range of public- and private-sector stakeholders of the strategy, will take place remotely to comply with current COVID-19-related travel restrictions. A six-week work plan to guide the review, which will gauge the effectiveness of the strategy’s implementation to date, will be ready by April 21, 2020. Although the plan will accommodate remote interventions, the total expected duration of the exercise will remain the same. Meanwhile, to expedite the process, the MITI has begun establishing a reference group to study and approve the review’s recommendations. The MITI, along with the Botswana Exporters and Manufacturers Association, co-chairs Botswana’s AGOA Steering Committee. The biennial review is expected to conclude by May 31, 2020.
