On May 28, 2020, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub, in partnership with the Lesotho Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), hosted a virtual workshop to present a USAID TradeHub-developed Supplier Development Strategy Framework to the chamber’s membership. The framework aims to guide the chamber’s efforts to boost the export competitiveness of their member companies. Six chamber members attended the workshop. With their feedback, the USAID TradeHub will work with chamber staff to pilot implementation of the framework with two member companies seeking to export to South Africa. The framework will also be workshopped with USAID TradeHub staff to enable them to host similar workshops in other southern African countries served by the USAID program. The May 28 workshop was carried out as part of a collaborative agreement, signed in March of this year, between the USAID TradeHub and the LCCI. The collaboration seeks to increase exports from Lesotho to South Africa as well as diversify Lesotho’s exports to the United States under the African Growth and Opportunity Act. A related aim is to attract technology and capital investments into the country from South Africa. A USAID TradeHub-developed national strategy to boost Lesotho’s exports to the US was launched in November 2019 in Maseru.
