On May 6, 2020, the USAID TradeHub met with a representative of South Africa-based Shoprite, Africa’s largest food retailer, to explore opportunities for sourcing from regional suppliers, including through a virtual meeting with prospective exporters. The meeting revealed demand for quality honey, nuts, beans, and specialty food products, especially for Shoprite’s health-food private label, Simple Truth. The retailer agreed to participate in a virtual meeting with prospective suppliers to raise awareness about consumer requirements. The USAID TradeHub, meanwhile, is gathering information on prospective suppliers to inform the content of the planned webinar, which will take place later this quarter. Shoprite Holdings Ltd. operates more than 2,372 outlets in 15 countries across Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. Of these stores, 2,007 are in South Africa, which, along with the United States, is a key export destination for USAID TradeHub-supported firms throughout the region.
