Ongoing discussions between the USAID TradeHub and the Mozambique Ministry of International Trade and Industry are fast-tracking implementation of the country’s African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) utilization strategy. The momentum follows establishment of a local USAID TradeHub office in Maputo, which has worked with the ministry to reinvigorate its AGOA working group. The Ministry has since reached out to working group stakeholders, including the main private-sector association, the Confederation of Trade Associations (CTA); the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce; the Tax Authority; the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; and the Ministry of the Sea, Internal Waters, and Fisheries to kickstart their deliberations. Although a planned March 30, 2020 meeting was postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the ministry is currently exploring ways to conduct this meeting virtually. The USAID TradeHub, meanwhile, will be supporting this effort as well as collaborating with the ministry to ensure successful implementation of the AGOA strategy.
