On September 1, 2020, in collaboration with DMG Events, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub moderated the first of six virtual events that are part of DMG’s eFood & Hospitality Next Digital Summit—a 30-day e-learning, webinar, and virtual event series. The USAID TradeHub-led session covered the market entry requirements of large South African retailers, including Shoprite, Pick n Pay, and Woolworths. The webinar targeted regional exporters, sharing trends in the South African consumer market as well as how best to leverage them. Panelists included Pick n Pay’s Innovation and Trend Specialist Vicky Jacobs and Health Category Buyer Wandile Bakaco. Both offered practical tips on how regional exporters can list their firms with the retailer, the subsequent market testing process, and the benefits of Pick n Pay’s SME development program. DMG Events is also securing introductions for the USAID TradeHub with Food Lovers’ Market and Clicks Group. USAID TradeHub’s moderation of events such as the DMG virtual events, forms part of its objective to increase exports from targeted Southern African to South Africa, by helping export firms understand the requirements of the target market.
