On September 9, 2020, the USAID Southern Africa Trade and Investment Hub, in partnership with DMG Events, hosted a webinar exploring the benefits of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) to Southern African exporters seeking to access the U.S. market. The webinar featured the insights of a U.S customs lawyer appointed by the USAID TradeHub to develop an AGOA toolkit. The consultant gave an overview of the basic requirements for exporting to the United States, including the documentation required for food and beverage products, in particular. Firms were introduced to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule, methods for the valuation of goods, and country of origin rules. Government representatives participating in the webinar hailed from Egypt, Somalia, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. Meanwhile private firms and market facilitators—such as trade promotion agencies and business membership organizations—joined from Algeria, Botswana, Brazil, Egypt, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zambia. The webinar organizer, DMG Events, was contracted to host a series of events for the USAID TradeHub as part of this year’s eFood & Hospitality Next Digital Summit.
